Belkyra vs CoolSculpting for a Double Chin

Both permanently reduce fat cells under the chin, and both need more than one session. Belkyra is injected, which makes it precise and better suited to small, well-defined pockets. CoolSculpting uses a suction applicator and generally suits larger, more uniform areas. The deciding factor is your anatomy, not the technology.

What they have in common

Both are non-surgical, both destroy fat cells rather than shrinking them, and in both cases the destroyed cells do not come back. Both need a series of sessions, and both take a couple of months after the final session before the result is final.

Critically, neither treats loose skin. If what is blurring your jawline is skin laxity rather than fat volume, neither of these is the right treatment — and a good assessment will tell you that before you spend anything.

Where they genuinely differ

Precision. Belkyra is injected, so it can be placed exactly where fat sits and can follow an irregular pocket. CoolSculpting depends on the applicator drawing tissue in — effective on a generous, evenly distributed pad, less so on a small or awkwardly shaped one.

Swelling. This is the practical difference most patients underestimate. Belkyra swelling is substantial and visible for several days after each session; it is the treatment working, but it needs planning around. CoolSculpting is usually less visible afterwards, though numbness in the area can persist for weeks.

Assessment. Belkyra is a prescription medicine administered by a regulated health professional after a medical assessment. Cryolipolysis is a device treatment and, depending on the setting, may involve less clinical oversight.

Which one suits you

Belkyra tends to be the better choice when the pocket is small or defined, when you want contouring precision along the jawline, or when the volume simply would not fill an applicator.

CoolSculpting tends to be the better choice when there is a larger, uniform volume of fat, when you want fewer sessions, or when several days of visible swelling would be difficult to accommodate.

Neither is the answer when the underlying issue is skin laxity, a recessed chin, or the position of the hyoid bone — a proportion of “double chins” are structural rather than fatty, and no fat-reduction treatment will change them. This is exactly what an in-person assessment is for.

Common Questions

Is Belkyra or CoolSculpting better for a double chin?

Neither is universally better. Belkyra is injected and suits small, well-defined fat pockets and precise contouring. CoolSculpting uses an applicator and suits larger, more uniform volumes. Your anatomy decides which is appropriate.

Are the results from either treatment permanent?

Yes, in both cases. Each destroys fat cells, and destroyed fat cells do not regenerate. Significant overall weight gain can still enlarge the remaining cells, so results are best maintained at a stable weight.

Which has more downtime?

Belkyra. Swelling under the chin is pronounced for several days after each session. CoolSculpting typically causes less visible swelling, though numbness in the treated area can last for weeks.

Will either treatment tighten loose skin under my chin?

No. Both reduce fat only. If skin laxity is the main issue, you need a different treatment, and an honest assessment should say so before you commit to either.

How many sessions will I need?

Belkyra typically needs two to four sessions six to eight weeks apart. CoolSculpting typically needs one to three. The exact number depends on how much fat is present.

Can I have both?

It is uncommon and rarely necessary. Where a large volume is reduced with cryolipolysis first, Belkyra is occasionally used afterwards to refine a residual pocket.
